American Nightmare (The Purge)
This is one of the sagas that has established itself in recent years. The universe ofAmerican nightmare, or The Purge in English, describes an alternate world where the US government allows almost all crime for 12 hours each year. This event is called the cleansing. The goal ? Reduce crime by allowing everyone’s impulses to express themselves freely for one night. Originally written and directed by American James DeMonaco, the franchise was subsequently handed over to other filmmakers. For the fourth and fifth opus, the one that was the origin of everything was only in the manuscript. He will return to the furnace and mill for the sixth film. Another notable creative behind the project, Jason Blum, founder and head of the horror film production house Blumhouse, and Michael Bay, the famous director of Transformers and Pearl Harbor, are producing the various feature films.
Story-wise, the first film is a Home-Invasion-style behind-the-scenes affair. Like Panic Room, it presents the adventures of a family whose house is taken by storm. Unlike David Fincher’s film, American Nightmare adds the Purge principle. Limited to a single house in the early films, the sequels offer a much larger universe depicting purges in North American cities. More or less independent stories are told, although we find recurring characters, always in this alternate universe. To further elaborate the concept, a series consisting of two seasons and called The Purge was also born between 2018 and 2019.
Stephen King’s cult work has had the right to recent adaptations. From the universe of the most adapted writer in film history, the two “It” feature films by Andrés Muschietti are available on Prime Video. In October 1988, 12-year-old Bill Denbrough made a paper sailboat for Georgie, his brother two years younger. Georgie is sailing the boat through the rainy streets of the small town of Derry when it falls into the sewers. As he tries to retrieve it, Georgie sees a clown through the drain. The latter, who introduces himself as Pennywise, urges Georgie to approach, then rips off his arm and drags him into the sewers. The rest of the film tells the story of Bill and his group of friends a few months later.
The two re-appropriations of Pennywise stories appeared nearly 30 years after the original TV movies. Enough to traumatize a whole new generation… And the expected result has, it seems, been fully achieved. With more than 700 million dollars in worldwide box office receipts, the first part of the remake rose to the tenth place among the films that attracted the most people to cinemas in 2017. That year, the film even surpassed works such as Dunkirk, Logan or even Kong: Skull Island. An operation all the more profitable when you know that the film “only” cost $35 million. It even became the highest-grossing horror film in cinema history.

Magic: The Warren Files
Still in the critical and commercial successes of the last decade, you can discover one of the terrible universes that James Wan initiated. To Magic: The Warren Files, the creator of Saw addressed the theme of exorcism and occult revelations. Released in July 2013, this film is the first to adapt the stories of the Warrens. This duo really existed. During the second half of the 20th century, they described themselves as the “greatest demon hunters in the world”. Between 1988 and 2004, they published 6 books telling their professional anecdotes around the world. At the same time, they collect many relics, allegedly evil, in one of the rooms in their house. The latter, which is visible in the film, had been converted into a museum in the 2010s, but it had to close for administrative reasons.
This 1 hour 52 minute feature film takes place in 1971. We discover Roger and Carolyn Perron moving into a farm in Harrisville with their five daughters. Arriving in front of the building, their dog refuses to enter the house. The owners realize that the entrance to a cellar has been condemned. Paranormal events occur from the first nights. All the clocks in the house stop at 3:07. The dog is found dead in the morning and the mother wakes up with big bruises. So Carolyn contacts demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. They agree to conduct an initial investigation, where Lorraine, a medium, learns that spirits have clung to the Perron family and that leaving the house will not free them.
To satisfy gore fans, Jeepers Creepers mixes a scene of terror and graphic violence, all through a more than disturbing chase. In this film released in 2001, we follow Trish and her brother Darry driving on the roads of Florida. Suddenly, an old truck stalks them menacingly before passing them. Later, they see the driver of this truck throwing strange figures covered in bloodstained sheets into a large pipe sticking out of the ground. While peering into this canal, Darry makes a macabre discovery that will anger the driver. The duo will then have to survive the repeated attacks of this bloodthirsty killer who will try to silence them forever.
With a budget of $10 million, the 1 hour and 31 minute feature grossed 6 times more upon release. A passion that allows two sequels to see the light of day in 2003 and 2017. The second opus is also available on Prime Video. In addition, a reboot of the saga will be shown in November 2022 in France, direct to DVD. Already distributed in the US, this new episode fetches the critical rating of 0%, the worst possible review on the site and a public rating of 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. The opportunity is then perfect to return to the basics of the original work.
Zombies are skiing
A break is needed! To decompress and spend a fun and relaxed Halloween night, why not try a good nanar? With Zombies are skiing, you will be served! In this Austrian horror comedy, we meet zombies and board sports enthusiasts during a descent. A perfect opportunity to rest your tense little muscles between two scary movies. In this feature film, three young snowboarders find themselves initiated in spite of themselves into a crazy story. Their ski trip takes a very strange turn when a scientific experiment unleashes a horde of zombies and mutated wild animals in the Austrian Alps. There is no wonderful country or Christian Clavier on the program here, but rather a large dose of everything marked by hemoglobin.
Piranha 3D 2
Always in a light tone, Piranha 3D 2 is also available on the Prime Video catalog. In this second nanar, we follow the adventures of carnivorous fish that massacre students in the middle of Spring Break. Like the first film, Piranha 2 is somewhere between the parody of James Cameron’s iconic film and the real monster movie. With a very small budget of $5 million, this film managed to capture the public fans of Movie Z by generating approximately $8.5 million in receipts. This feature film, reserved for fans of the genre, takes place one year after the massacre of Lake Victoria by piranhas, an extermination campaign that has rendered the lakeside environment uninhabitable. After this event, the city was largely abandoned. In another nearby lake, two farmers make hidden Piranha eggs hatch and be eaten by them. The dangerous creatures then go to a nearby water park.
Without a sound
You may have heard of Without a sound ? A quiet place, in its original version, is an American thriller film written and directed by John Krasinski. The film was released in 2018, while a sequel was released in 2020. Acclaimed by critics and the public, this atmospheric film offers an original concept. Fan of high voltage films, you will be served! In a world overrun by noise-sensitive monsters, the slightest sound can cause death. With skin of incredible resistance, these creatures have wiped out most living things on the planet in a matter of months. A family then tries to survive in the heart of a post-apocalyptic universe where dialogue is rare. A year after the savage murder of one of her children, a mother is awaiting a happy event. The latter must be born and grow in an environment where noise is silence.
You are afraid of the dark and narrow places and you fear that a monster is hiding in dark corners when you walk around at night! Well, the saga The descent will send shivers down your spine. In the first chapter of this ditycon, we follow 6 young women trapped in a cave. Blocked by landslides, the strange scenes and unfortunate accidents chain together. Disabled by injuries and looking for a way out, the young explorers will realize that the caves they visit hold very dark secrets. In the sequel, also available on Prime Video, we return to this famous cave. In order not to spoil it for you, the script specifics of this opus will not be specified. Just know that the tone of this film is in radical contrast to the first. The creepiness is more frontal and the action is much more nervous.
We end this horrifying journey on Prime Video with The witch, released in June 2016. Director Robert Egger’s eerie atmosphere and the soundtrack by Mark Korven will transport you to this universe. Acclaimed by critics, this feature film received a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Forget the exaggerated jumpscare and opt for millimetric lighting control and a well-crafted staging. In this film, the director tries to hide the horror in order to make you imagine the worst! The story takes place in New England around 1630. The Witch follows a farmer who is driven from his colonial plantation. He is then forced to install his family on an isolated piece of land on the edge of a forest. The latter is known to be under the influence of witches. Quickly the disappearance of one of the children worries the family. Subsequently, other disturbing phenomena begin to emerge.
