The British, French and German governments on Tuesday condemned new measures taken by Iran aimed at “expanding its nuclear programme”.

“The governments of France, Germany and the United Kingdom condemn the new measures taken by Iran aimed at expanding the country’s nuclear program, following confirmation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Tehran has begun producing 60% enriched uranium in the Fordo- factory,” reads a joint statement published by the three countries and posted on the British government’s website.

“By increasing its production capacity at the two nuclear facilities at Fordo and Natanz, well beyond the limitations of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and by accelerating its production of enriched uranium, ‘Iran has taken significant new steps to derail the JCPOA. its content,” the text of the joint statement adds.

The three countries stressed that “Iran’s decision to increase its production of highly enriched uranium at the Fordo underground enrichment site is of particular concern”.

In their joint statement, London, Paris and Berlin believe that “this measure by Iran poses a challenge to the international non-proliferation system. This measure, which carries significant proliferation risks, has no credible civilian justification”.

“Iran’s actions are all the more concerning as Iran stopped implementing all transparency measures under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action five months ago,” the spouse said.

The three countries stressed that the Iranian escalation is unacceptable, recalling that Tehran has a legal obligation under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to fully implement its safeguards agreement.

“We will continue to consult with our international partners on how to respond to Iran’s continued nuclear escalation,” the joint statement added.

Earlier in the day, Iranian state media reported that Tehran “started production of 60% enriched uranium for the first time in Fordo”.
