Britain imposes new sanctions on Iran

On Monday 14 November 2022, the United Kingdom announced new sanctions targeting around twenty Iranian officials in response to the crackdown on the demonstrations sparked in the country by the death of Mahsa Amini.

“These sanctions target leaders within the Iranian regime who are responsible for heinous human rights abuses”Secretary of State James Cleverly said in a statement.

A new set of sanctions

They were taken in a coordinated manner with other states and with the EU, which is due to approve a new set of sanctions on Monday. “Together with our partners, we are sending a clear message to the Iranian regime: the crackdown on protests must stop and freedom of expression must be respected”insisted James Cleverly.

Among the sanctioned Iranian officials are Information and Communications Minister Issa Zarepour and the head of the country’s cyber police.

Journalists arrested in Iran

Since the start of the protests, the regime has blocked or restricted Iranians’ access to the Internet and social networks, such as Instagram and Whatsapp, while journalists have been arrested, the British Foreign Office recalls.

Last month, in an earlier round of sanctions, Britain sanctioned leaders of Iran’s morality police and other regime officials.
