King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla were the target of at least four egg pelts this Wednesday in York (Yorkshire, UK). According to The Guardian, they were visiting the city to inaugurate a statue of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The royal couple waved to the crowd that had come to welcome them as one person threw several eggs at them. He also allegedly shouted, “This country was built on the blood of slaves.”
Suspect arrested
No egg reached King Charles III and his wife, who were immediately dismissed by the police. The alleged attacker was detained by police officers amid chants of protest from the crowd, such as “Shame on you” and “God bless the king”. The 23-year-old suspect was arrested “on suspicion of breach of public order”. It would be a former candidate from the Green Party (The Greens), also an activist in the environmental group Extinction Rebellion.
As reminded Western France, Britain’s slave past has been particularly evoked in recent months. Prince Andrew and Charles III have faced criticism during their trip to the Caribbean. Some states are demanding official apologies and financial compensation for colonization in previous centuries.
