Echo Studio, Amazon’s high-end speaker, is getting more efficient

Amazon’s $200 Echo Studio speaker is one of the best smart speakers out there, with a strong focus on sound quality. And if you’ve got one, you’ll be happy to know it’s about to get even better, as Amazon has announced new software improvements — as well as a new color.

The Echo Studio hasn’t received a hardware update unlike other Amazon products, but that doesn’t mean it won’t get better. Amazon is rolling out a software update with new spatial audio processing technology and frequency range expansion. The new spatial sound technology mirrors a hi-fi stereo speaker – for music, this means that voices are projected in the middle and instruments to the sides. This creates a better, concert-like listening experience that is more true to what the artist intended.

This new spatial sound processing technology is already available on the Echo Show 15, and according to Amazon, it will soon make its way to other compatible Echo devices.

Extending the frequency range, on the other hand, will give you “improved midrange clarity and deeper bass” in addition to better performance, Amazon says. This appears to be a more generic “sound quality enhancement” feature, and we’ll have to see if it makes a difference in real life.

While we don’t have any new hardware, we do have a new color. The Echo Studio now comes in a new Glacier White colorway which looks very stylish, in addition to the existing Charcoal option.

If the new features or the new white color are appealing enough to entice you to buy one, you can do so for the usual price of $200.
