Extreme weather events associated with climate change are increasingly threatening the security of food and water supplies around the world. Africa, already struggling with low agricultural production and severely degraded land, is disproportionately affected.
To help governments and non-profit organizations on the continent meet these challenges, Esri, the world leader in location intelligence, has partnered with Microsoft on a sustainable agricultural development initiative in Africa. Together, Esri and Microsoft will create and launch technology solutions that enable organizations in Africa to perform large-scale mapping of crop types to improve farm management.
“Microsoft and Esri have a long history of collaboration, including a recent initiative to create global land cover maps through the Planetary Computing Program, including a catalog of global environmental data from the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World from Esri. We are pleased to now expand this collaboration to support the sustainable development of agriculture in Africa.”said Richard Budden, Esri’s vice president for the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia.
