Harry Potter coins launched in UK

The British organization responsible for printing coins and banknotes announced in a press release on Thursday that a series of coins bearing the image of Harry Potter was created to mark the 25th anniversary of the publication of JK Rowling’s first book .

Happy birthday Harry. “The Royal Mint is launching a collection of spellbinding coins to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,'” the British body responsible for printing money and banknotes in the Kingdom said on Thursday. To celebrate the occasion, the famous little wizard will appear on a 50 pence coin.

It will not be the only hero in the saga created by JK Rowling to have his portrait drawn for the occasion, as Dumbledore will also be represented at this special collection. A total of four model pieces have been imagined, the other two highlighting the Hogwarts Express train and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Pieces with an optical effect

True to the fantastical spirit of the seven-volume saga, these collectibles have been given an optical effect. The latter imitates the effect of a “thunder” when the coin is turned in front of the light. It was achieved thanks to a state-of-the-art laser which not only gives the coins a “magical” character but also enables them to be secured and authenticated, the Royal Mint said.

The 50 pence piece bearing the image of Harry is already available on the website of The Royal Mint and retails for £20, or almost €23.

A true literary phenomenon, the saga of JK Rowling has sold more than 500 million copies worldwide since its creation in 1997.
