In their coup, they forced the police to stop traffic. English environmental activists from the Just Stop Oil group climbed onto motorway gantries located on a major motorway axis in London on Monday morning.
This new action by the militant group came as world leaders gather at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt on Monday. It is part of the group’s campaign “to ask the government to suspend all new licenses and permits for oil and gas”.
A month of powerful actions
On Sunday evening, however, the police arrested three activists as a preventive measure. On Monday, four other people were arrested by the authorities before the action started.
Just Stop Oil led a month of powerful action in London in October. Activists have thus placed the wax statue of King Charles in Madame Tussauds, thrown tomato soup on Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” at the National Gallery or splashed paint on an Aston Martin dealership.
“Civil resistance is inevitable and justified. This will continue until the UK government changes course,โ read a statement from the environmental group. In France, Extinction Rebellion activists are organizing similar operations on the Paris ring road.
