In Britain, women start gambling to make ends meet

(ETX Daily Up) – Inflation is at a level not seen in the UK since 1982. Faced with this worrying situation, many women are turning to gambling. One in ten Britons have already taken a chance in the hope of improving their lifestyle, according to a new report.

The BeGamble association investigated this phenomenon by interviewing 1,606 women between the ages of 18 and 49 in August who had already tried gambling. It found that 24% of them are likely to gamble more in the coming months in response to runaway inflation in the UK. Regardless of their age.

Winter is a period when women generally go more to betting and gambling sites to make ends meet. However, the organization fears an unprecedented peak in attendance due to rising energy and food prices in the UK.

“As financial difficulties grow amid the cost of living crisis and the number of women gambling online grows, we fear this could create a real storm which could lead to an increase in the number of women with gambling-related problems,” ZoĆ« Osmond , CEO of GambleAware, said in a statement.

Unfortunately, the figures prove him right: one in five Britons say they have already felt stress and anxiety because of their gambling habits. More worryingly, a third of these women said they would not dare talk about their substance abuse problems with a family member. Shame is the main reason (49%).

Social pressure also plays a big role. More than 60% of respondents believe that gambling is more frowned upon among women than among men. This does not surprise Dr. Linda Papadopoulos, a psychologist working with the BeGamble association as part of their latest prevention campaign. “We cannot underestimate the role that shame plays in why women do not seek help for gambling-related problems. Sometimes it is difficult to start talking about it, but suffering in silence only increases the feeling of isolation,” she explained. “It often only takes one conversation to get help, so if you’re worried about yourself or a loved one, talk and get help.”
