Let’s face it, the wireless headphone market can get a bit samey, but Ultimate Ears has something very different in the form of the malleable UE Fits.
While the UE Fits have been available in the US for a while (for $199), the company is now launching them in the UK, Canada and Europe (France and Germany).
It’s “the world’s first truly wireless earphones that fit consumers’ unique footprints in less than 60 seconds.” It’s an oddly specific claim, but we still haven’t seen much like it on the market beyond Snugs, and especially not with such a simple home casting process.
A common problem with in-ear headphones is that everyone’s ear and ear canal are different shapes. That’s why most come with a variety of sizes of silicone tips, but that’s not always enough.
I have, at least according to Snugs, very small ear canals, and that often means I can’t get a secure fit. If I had a pound for every time an earphone fell, I’d be pretty rich.
However, UE Fits adapts to your ear to ensure the fit matches your ears perfectly, resulting in comfort and sound isolation. It does this with the help of patented “Lightform Technology”.
UE ships the headphones in a light-protected box, and after putting them in your ears, the gel-filled tips are hardened so they permanently retain their shape. The UE Fits app will guide you through the procedure and instruct the headphones to emit an LED light to solidify the tips.
If you’re worried about getting it wrong, UE offers a custom fit guarantee, so the company will work with you to ensure the fit is correct. Ear tips are one size, but UE can send a set of smaller or bigger tips to try if needed.
