London blocks the way to Scottish independence

The Supreme Court has ruled that a referendum cannot be held without the consent of the British Parliament.

The legal path to Scottish independence is blocked. It is not a surprise, but the blow is no less severe for the independence camp: the British Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that a new independence referendum could not be organized without London’s approval. However, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned that she had not said her last word.

The five judges of the highest legal body in the United Kingdom unanimously held that a second referendum could not be held without the approval of the British Parliament. For the Court, such a vote – even advisory – would have direct consequences for the union of the United Kingdom, a “reserved” domain of the central government in London. He must therefore give his consent. Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the independence party SNP (Scottish National Party) announced a few weeks ago her intention to organize a referendum on independence in October 2023…
