The revelation emerges as the spotlight is on Microsoft’s acquisition process for Activision Blizzard.
Microsoft recently admitted that its sales of Xbox One were much lower than those of the PS4 of Sony. The American giant is confident in documents submitted last week to the Brazilian regulator for the competition.
Microsoft submitted the said documents in order to obtain the green light from the South American nation for its deal with Blizzard. The information, initially obtained by Game Lusterhas been translated from Portuguese by this media.
A more than respectable distance
“Sony has overtaken Microsoft in console sales and installed base, having sold more than double the number of Xboxes sold on the last generation”confesses Microsoft in the documents.
If the firm has not published its console sales figures since 2015, recent data provided by Sony estimates the number of PS4s sold at the end of the first quarter of 2022 at 117.2 million. Microsoft, we can get a rough estimate of 58.5 million Xbox One sold since the release of the console in 2013. This figure is not far from that disclosed by the research firm Ampere Analysis in 2020, namely 51 million consoles.
Priority to players rather than plastic
Judging by why Microsoft stopped releasing its console sales numbers, its recent admission doesn’t change its priorities. In 2020, Phil Spencer, the head of the company’s gaming division, said in an interview with The Guardian that the most important was the number of players affected and not the number of consoles sold.
It is for this reason that Microsoft has, over the past few years, emphasized the Cloud and its Xbox Game Pass. The desire to attract more gamers also motivated Microsoft’s ambition to acquire Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. This same ambition that led him to confess Sony’s superiority in the console sales segment.
