Microsoft is planning a status indicator for VPN connections on Windows 11

After releasing Windows 11’s major update of the year, 22:22, Microsoft does not plan to slow down the development of Windows 11. In fact, the company has given its operating system a new feature.

This takes the form of a VPN status indicator that Microsoft aims to improve the technology on its PC operating system. The company, which has so far lagged behind in this type of functionality, finally seems to want to catch up, even if the rollout is not yet complete.

Microsoft is betting on a more efficient taskbar on Windows 11

If the rivalry between Windows and macOS appears to be turning in favor of Apple’s operating system, Microsoft does not want to admit defeat. The company, which could finally see its acquisition of Activision canceled, works daily to enrich its customers’ experience on PC.

As proof, many features have been integrated into Windows 11 since its release. So after the big Windows 11 update of the year, 22:2, Microsoft is preparing to roll out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25252 now. This update is already available on the Dev channel for those enrolled in the Windows Insider program.

This build implemented by the multinational promises a better user experience with the taskbar search. But the real news this update brings is the appearance of an indicator on the taskbar when a VPN connection is active. Microsoft said this in a blog post to that effect:

“We added a VPN status in the system tray when you are connected to a recognized VPN profile. The VPN icon, a small shield, will be superimposed in your system’s accent color over the active network connection.

Microsoft hopes to catch up with this new opportunity

Microsoft is clearly taking care of its delay in this type of functionality. In fact, it should be remembered that Android devices, iPhones and iPads from the manufacturer Apple have all had a similar function for years. This makes it easier for the user to know when a VPN is active, but also which application controls it.

Although it is beneficial to integrate such a status indicator into the Windows 11 taskbar from now on, the implementation is quite basic for now. But it is nevertheless a step in the right direction. And if we look back a bit, Microsoft has made a great effort to expand the taskbar in its Windows operating system.

The company has been slowly adding more and more health indicators over the past few years. For example, we have the microphone access flag, which appeared in one of the Windows 10 updates. Right now, the new feature is not rolling out to everyone on Windows 11 and remains in the testing stage. However, the public release should take place in the coming days for all users.
