Microsoft Unveils Project AirSim to Accelerate Development of Autonomous Air Mobility

Microsoft unveiled the AirSim project, an innovation, at the Farnborough International Airshow. The AirSim project uses high-fidelity simulation to safely build, train, and test autonomous aircraft on the Azure platform. It is basically an artificial intelligence (AI) powered simulator for drones, flying taxis and other advanced air mobility (AAM) vehicles. Today, a limited preview of Project AirSim is available.

Project AirSim customers will also be able to access a library of specific locations, like New York or London, or generic spaces, like an airport, and create millions of precise 3D environments using data from Bing Maps and other suppliers.

What is the AirSim project? How does it work ?

Automation is important in a rapidly changing technological world, and Microsoft wants to accelerate autonomous flight by creating an end-to-end platform with the AirSim project. Although AirSim is already available and a popular research tool, it required extensive knowledge of coding and machine learning.

Through the AirSim project, manufacturers will be able to safely train future Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) systems in a virtualized world. Through the AirSim project, developers will have access to pre-trained AI modules, including sophisticated models for spotting and avoiding obstacles and performing precise landings.

By removing the need for deep machine learning expertise, these prebuilt capabilities expand the number of people who can begin training autonomous aircraft. Additionally, Microsoft said it was working closely with business partners to expand precise simulation to include weather, physics, and most importantly, the sensors an autonomous machine would use to “see” the world.
