Microsoft will soon allow recording the screen in video

It was announced, it’s happening: Microsoft is preparing very soon to implement a new video screen recording feature on Windows 11. The latter, which was revealed in October, will be integrated into the native capture tool.

Windows 11 should very soon get a long-awaited feature: video screen recording. Offered natively on macOS (notably via the cmd+shift+5 shortcut), and has been for years, this feature is still missing for Windows users. Already, the latter actually most often have to go through third-party recording software, which is sometimes paid and rarely practical.

Last October, however, on the occasion of the launch of the latest Surface devices (including Surface Pro 9, Surface Laptop 5 or Surface Studio 2+), Microsoft promised changes in this area with the introduction of a built-in function that allows video screen recording – and this time directly from the screen recording tool integrated into the operating system. Two months later, it looks like the rollout of this news is coming to fruition.

In any case, this is what we deduce after the publication of a new task (a system that allows the most motivated users to help Microsoft improve the Windows experience), precisely dedicated to this function, addressed to members of the Insider program. Spotted in Bug Bash 2022, launched by Microsoft on betas 22621.1028 and 22623.1028 (KB5021866), this quest was shared on Reddit by a certain SubjunctiveQuaver. Its presence suggests that Microsoft is currently testing its new screen recording feature in small groups to clean it of its latest bugs. In other words, the final launch seems to be fast approaching.

As Neowin points out, this quest doesn’t tell us much more than what we already know. We therefore still do not know what the recording parameters will be, the allowed video quality or the maximum length of these video recordings.

As a reminder, this feature had in any case been announced together with other new software features for Windows 11. Among them the integration of iCloud in the new Photos application or the addition of the Apple TV and Apple Music applications on Windows.
