On January 18th, we were all surprised by the news that Microsoft had acquired Activision Blizzard. The opportunity comes at the worst time in the history of the company responsible for classics such as Diablo, with several of its key figures accused of sexual harassment and fostering a toxic work environment over the past 20 years. Redmond’s takeover came as a relief to the company.

By then, Microsoft had completed the purchase of Zenimax on March 9, 2021, and the legal battle to get the green light from antitrust organizations around the world had begun.

A few hours ago, Activision Blizzard published its results for the third quarter of 2022, and despite a decrease in the number of monthly active users compared to the same period last year, Activision and Blizzard both recorded growth compared to the previous quarter. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the best-selling game in the franchise, and Overwatch 2 has already welcomed 35 million players in its first month.

Activision Blizzard’s own controversial CEO, Bobby Kotick, praised employees for their recent achievements and said during the presentation that the merger with Microsoft should be completed by June 2023. But in the meantime, Blizzard must focus on two exciting releases: World of Warcraft: Dragonflight and Diablo 4.
