Morocco imposed a 49% tariff on a range of British spirits.

The United Kingdom says it has negotiated with several countries to remove barriers that previously deterred British companies from selling alcohol in some of them, including Morocco, Britain’s public sector website says.

“After the government’s intervention (British, editor’s note), Morocco has scrapped the 49% duty wrongly imposed on a range of British spirits”, said the British Secretary of State for Trade, Kemi Badenoch, quoted by the same source.

Removal of customs barriers in Morocco, fourth African market for Scotch whiskybut also in other countries, such as Argentina which reduced the duty on whiskey from 35 to 20% and Tunisia which released alcoholic products blocked by its customs authorities, will allow UK products to reach millions of potential new customers.

According to the UK public sector website, these trade gains unlock deals worth more than £100m. for British alcohol companies.
