New features on the horizon for Microsoft Edge

Microsoft clearly intends to impose Edge as the reference web browser, especially against Google Chrome, which remains the most widely used in the world today. And since it reviewed its foundations, using the famous Chromium engine – the same as Chrom’s – the publisher has continued to optimize it and enrich it with new functions. Evidenced by the accelerated pace of updates, more and more frequent, and the announcement of novelties often very original.

But what’s new in Microsoft Edge 103? Released at the end of June 2022, the current version of Microsoft Edge is 103 (which incidentally bears the same number as the latest available version of Chrome…). It brings its share of novelties mainly oriented towards the world of games.

A new Gaming section

The home page of Edge concentrates by default a string of news (economy, health, television, sports, etc.). Version 103 adds a Gaming tab. On the program, video game news, of course, but also direct access to your streaming games for users subscribed to Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription game service. Note, however, that this feature is not yet rolled out in some countries. A simple matter of time.

A new button appears in the toolbar. Soberly titled Games, it provides access to many small games to pass the time such as incorrigible Solitaire, Mah-jong or even Minesweeper. The Games button is not enabled by default. Head over to Appearance settings under Buttons to show in toolbar to implement it.

Improved display quality

Clarity Boost. This is the name given by Microsoft to the function of Edge which increases the sharpness of games. Once the game (compatible) launched, it will suffice to activate it through a menu.

Edge already allows tabs to be paused when they are not displayed in order to limit resource consumption. Version 103 of the browser pushes the plug further and allows its activity to be automatically reduced as soon as the launch of a game is detected in order to leave as much RAM as possible and processor and graphics resources available. The option is to be activated in the browser settings in the System and performance section.

Future functions of Microsoft Edge

Microsoft is not going to stop on such a good path to perfect its browser which is picking up the hair of the beast. Some new tools are expected in the next releases.

A calculator, a unit converter and even a connection speed test tool should appear in the next few weeks within the browser. A dictionary and a translator are also on the program, although we do not know the date of their integration.

To save time and not having to open the Photos app that comes with Windows when it comes to quickly retouching an image, Edge should also integrate a quick retouching tool. According to some experts on the lookout for Microsoft news, this function would include some tools present in the publisher’s Photos app. Accessible via a right click on an image, it will allow you to crop, adjust some parameters (brightness, exposure, contrast, etc.), apply filters or even annotate the image.

The memory of Internet Explorer

For many years, Microsoft had managed to impose its Internet Explorer web browser. For a long time an essential reference, the tool has gradually fallen into disuse. Repeated security flaws, slowness, bugs, crashes, lack of adaptation to new web standards… Internet Explorer has ended up becoming the subject of much ridicule from both Internet users and developers. Until its end on June 15: after 27 years of loyal – but not necessarily good – service, Microsoft finally decided to bury Internet Explorer.

However, Microsoft has not left its operating system without a home web browser and has long since prepared its succession. Also, in 2015, the firm launched Edge Legacy, a new browser based on an in-house Edge HTML engine installed on PCs equipped with Windows 10. Bitter failure. The browser does not meet the expected success. It was already behind its time when it came out. It did not take extensions into account, had a few annoying bugs and above all, installed in the heart of Windows, it imposed itself all too often even if it was not configured as the default browser. So much so that a large part of Internet users only used Edge to download another browser, as was already the case for Internet Explorer.

But in 2020, change of strategy for Microsoft. Edge Legacy is abandoned in favor of… Edge. Exit the in-house Edge HTML engine. The browser this time adopts Chromium, the same base as Google Chrome. A capital and lucid decision that finally opens a path to success. In addition to the many similarities with Google Chrome (a classic interface, less chaotic tab management, etc.), Edge obviously allows synchronization with Microsoft accounts. Like Chrome with Google accounts, it provides direct access to the tools of the Microsoft 365 online suite. So much so that in April 2022, according to StatCounter, Microsoft occupied third place on the world podium for web browsers, all media combined. ) behind Google Chrome, still in the lead, and Safari but ahead of Firefox.

It must also be said that Microsoft is fighting on all fronts, since its browser is available on Windows, of course, but also macOS, iOS, Android and even Linux. Moreover, on Windows, Microsoft does not miss the slightest opportunity to impose Edge as the default browser. For example, queries made in the Windows search box inevitably lead to the opening of Edge as soon as the results appear on the Internet. Moreover, it is still impossible to remove Edge from Windows at the risk of compromising the stability of the system.

Fast, stable, efficient and open to developers who can dedicate extensions to it (the same as for Google Chrome), Edge nevertheless remains the object of all the attention of Microsoft, which devotes regular updates to it.
