On the occasion of the saga’s 40th anniversary (and yes already!) Microsoft has just released a major update to Microsoft Flight Simulator. In the current flight simulation reference, it is now possible to access the earlier parts of the saga.
This November 11, 2022, you might not know it, but the cult Flight Simulator video game license celebrated its 40th anniversary! And yes, the very first opus was released in 1982 by chance. For the occasion Microsoft and Asobo Studio, the Bordeaux studio behind the excellent games A Plague Talehas rolled out a major update to the latest Microsoft Flight Simulator edition.
This update notably includes a new airliner, the Airbus A310-300, as well as seven additional historic aircraft, namely:
- Wright Flyer from 1903
- Curtiss JN-4 Jenny from 1915
- Ryan NYP Spirit of St Louis from 1927
- Douglas DC-3 from 1935
- the sublime Grumman G-21 Goose from 1937
- Havilland DHC-2 Beaver from 1947
- the famous Hughes H-4 Hercules “Spruce Goose” from 1947
In addition, and as announced during the summer of 2021, helicopters and gliders are now available among the many units available to players. A first since the release of Flight Simulator X in 2006! But there is little surprise that Microsoft has been careful not to reveal in the full patch note for this update.

How to play the first Flight Simulator on the latest game
In fact, Reddit user HuguesMDflyer4 discovered a brand new easter egg in the game. it is possible to play old episodes of the license from the cockpit of an airplane in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Of course, it will take some manipulation to take advantage of it. Here is the procedure you need to follow:
- Start a game with the DA62 aircraft
- Sit down in the cockpit and switch to subjective view
- Set the ELT control to On (emergency signal), located on the right side of the control panel
You will see an old interface appear with the Microsoft logo. You can then choose to launch either Flight Simulator, Flight Simulator 2, Flight Simulator 3 or Flight Simulator 4 by moving the cursor. Note that these are actually full versions of the games, in other words, all the options available at the time are available. This is a gift that will delight nostalgics and veterans of the series.
