It is not only the new driver’s license recipient who is affected by this measure. These are of course the first goals, but they are not the only ones.
A young driver is a person who got their driving license less than three years ago, or a driver who has not been insured for three years.
If you have only driven a commercial vehicle insured by the company without having a personal car that you insure, you join the club for young drivers.
Why a supplement?
The insurance company does not like to compensate the consequences of an accident. According to this regulation, it will impose a surcharge on drivers with no history, because the statistics are clear: 18-25 year olds represent almost a quarter of accident victims.
This additional premium is listed in the Insurance Act (Article A 121-1-1): “the reference premium […] may, for policyholders with a license for less than three years and for policyholders with a license for three years or more, but who cannot provide proof of effective insurance in the last three years prior to the signing of the contract, give rise to the application of an additional fee. “
How much for the prize?
This additional premium may not exceed 100% of the reference premium. This ceiling is reduced to 50% for beginners who have obtained their accompanied driver’s license (the conditions referred to in Article R. 123-3 of the Motorway Act).
The vast majority of insurance companies will therefore use this calculation: 100% the first year (premium multiplied by 2); 50% the other; 25% on the third and simple bonus on the 4the year, if the driver has not registered an at-fault accident.
Please note that the bonus-malus is calculated from the first year. In the event of an at-fault accident, the additional premium is increased by the fine.
An advantage of accompanied driving
Young drivers who have obtained their accompanied driving license receive a small discount because they have driven up to 3,000 km accompanied by a responsible adult.
The additional premium is 50% the first year, then 25% and 12.5% the 3rd year.e year to reach the simple bonus on the 4the year. This calculation is made in the absence of a responsible accident.
The case of drivers with no history for more than 3 years is not considered. However, there is still the possibility that the latter can negotiate with the insurance company to obtain a lower premium.
Escape the prize
Unfortunately, it is theoretically not possible to escape the mechanism with the additional premium. You can try to reduce it by negotiating because not all insurance companies use the same trading practices.
For their part, mutuals can offer their young members a lower premium by anticipating loyalty. Another option is to take out the same insurance as your parents; the multiplication of contracts with the same insurance company can pay off.
Declaring yourself as the secondary driver of the parent’s vehicle can also be a solution, unless the insurance company still charges an additional premium to the existing contract.
