SpaceX prepares to test its Starship-Super Heavy rocket on the launch pad

The fans of SpaceX have been waiting for it for some time, the company has finally brought its booster Super Heavy on the launch pad last Thursday, June 23. The booster in question is called “Booster 7”and with the vessel Starshipthey will undergo pressure testsand maybe also carry out a static ignition. The latter will make it possible to assess the ability of the rocket to burn fuel consistently over a certain period of time.

SpaceX’s Starship program is based on a combination of the Starship spacecraft and a heavy launch vehicle called Super Heavy. These two elements are both reusable and when put together we get the tallest rocket in the world with a height of 120 m.

According to the information, if the Super Heavy survives the test of its Raptor 2 enginesit could send the Starship into orbit as soon as next July.

Convince the FAA

So far, SpaceX’s flight tests of the Starship have consisted of high altitude flights who had not used the Super Heavy. These tests took place between August 2020 and May 2021. After that, the company had to wait for the FAA or Federal Aviation Administration publishes an environmental assessment report before it can proceed with an orbital flight.

A few weeks ago, the FAA finally published the long-awaited report, and authorized SpaceX to continue its work in Boca Chica on the condition of carrying out 75 actions specified in the document. However, before it can perform an orbital flight, SpaceX will still need to obtain a launch license from the FAA. This license will be issued if the agency judges that SpaceX has taken into account the recommendations included in the report.

Place for launches

For Elon Musk, the boss of SpaceX, it is already time to prepare for the first launch of the Starship-Super Heavy. In a recent tweet, Musk said the launch would be next month. He also added that they will prepare a second Starship-Super Heavy which will be launched in August, then it will be a launch per month.

Anyway, testing the Starship-Super Heavy quickly is now necessary since SpaceX’s ship will be one of the centerpieces of the return of humans to the Moon. For its Artemis program, NASA has indeed chosen a lunar version of Starship to bring its first astronauts to the surface of the Moon in 2025.
