Surface Laptop 2: Microsoft stops firmware updates

Microsoft has ended support for their Surface Laptop 2. This means that users with this machine will no longer receive firmware updates. There will also be no more driver updates from Microsoft.

End of support is therefore a reality now, but it’s worth noting that Windows 10 or Windows 11 on the Surface Laptop 2 continues to work normally. Updates via Windows Update are always relevant, whether it’s news about operating systems or security fixes.

Microsoft released its Surface Laptop 2 in October 2018. The laptop has 8th generation Intel processors and a new black color. Microsoft has therefore decided to drop its support after four years.

Most Microsoft Surface devices now only get driver and firmware updates for 4 years, with some exceptions. In 2023, Microsoft will end support for the Surface Book 2 from 2017, the Surface Pro 6 from 2018, and the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro 7 released in 2019.

The Surface Laptop 2 was succeeded by the Surface Laptop 3, which made it possible to have a size of 15 inches for the first time on a Surface product. The laptop is next in line for end of support and is expected to reach that milestone later next year on October 22, 2023.
