It is the largest fine imposed by the French authority in 2022. The Commission Nationale Informatique et Libert├ęs announced last year that it would carry out a control campaign on websites that do not respect privacy, after holding Google, Facebook and Amazon to sanction Cnil this time Microsoft by imposing a fine of 60 million euros on the company, as announced on Thursday, December 22.

The authority justifies this amount with ” the extent of the processing, the number of data subjects and the US company’s profits from advertising revenue with these cookies.

Obtain user consent

Since April 1, 2021, the countries of the European Union, and France in particular, have required websites to place a panel on their pages to allow Internet users to reject or accept “cookies” as simply as possible.

These small computer files that collect private data allow Internet giants to bombard Internet users with so-called “targeted” ads.

With this fine, the French digital regulator also obliges Microsoft to collect consent within three months from Internet users in France who could not easily accept or reject these advertising cookies. Otherwise, the company will be obliged to pay a penalty of 60,000 euros per day of delay.
