news culture The Lord of the Rings: which characters from Peter Jackson’s trilogy are present in the Amazon series The Rings of Power?

On September 2, the Rings of Power series will adapt some key events from Tolkien’s work. Although nearly 3000 years before Lord of the Rings, this story will bring together several great figures already seen in Peter Jackson’s trilogy. But which ones?

Centered on the history of the Second Age of Middle-earth and the Isle of Númenor, series Rings of Power launches September 2 on Amazon Prime Video. In JRR Tolkien’s timeline, this pivotal period contains a very large number of events of considerable importance in understanding what changed Middle-earth. The series should thus tell us about the creation of the Rings of Power by the Elf-smiths and the One Ring by Sauron, but also the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, without forgetting the “Last Alliance of Elves and Men”. Although located far upstream of the events specific to the Lord of the Ringsthe series should nevertheless be interested in several characters well known to fans of Peter Jackson’s trilogy. What are they ?

Summary

Sauron

Long before he struck the collective imagination in the intangible form of Sauron’s eye, the Lord of Mordor roamed Middle-earth under the deceptive identity of Annatar, the “Lord of Gifts”. Thanks to his immense knowledge, he managed to corrupt the Elves of Eriador to encourage them to forge the Rings of Power to enable him to enslave the three great peoples of Middle-earth: Men, Dwarves and Elves. Secretly, Sauron forged the One Ring to rule all others, thereby betraying his true nature to Celebrimbor who decided to conceal the three rings of the Elves: Narya, Nenya and Vilya. At war with the Elves, Sauron was then repulsed for the first time by the combined armies of Gil-galad and Tar-Minastir, eleventh King of Númenor.

Centuries later, after having been (or let?) be captured by Ar-Pharazôn, Sauron is taken to Númenor where he persuades the king to attack Valinor, Land of the Valar, resulting in the entire island being submerged. Sauron’s physical shell is then destroyed but his spirit returns to Mordor where he eventually regains form. Opposed to Gondor founded by the Númenoreans in exile, Sauron is defeated again in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, defeated by Elendil and Gil-galad who nevertheless both lose their lives in the siege of Barad-Dûr. This battle marks the last year of the Second Age, but the series could well go further…

Isildur

The Lord of the Rings: which characters from Peter Jackson's trilogy are present in the Amazon series The Rings of Power?

Central figure of the prologue of the long version of Peter Jackson’s film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RingIsildur is the son of Elendil. He seizes the One Ring himself during Sauron’s defeat by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men by severing his hand, unaware that it will be his downfall.. Refusing to follow the recommendations of Elrond who advised him to destroy the Ring, Isildur succumbs to the attractive power of the Unique. He perishes in an ambush where he is torn to pieces by Orcs, betrayed by the Ring itself which slips from his finger as he attempts to cross the Anduin River. This is how the One Ring inherited the name “Scourge of Isildur”.

The story of Isildur is closely linked to that of Narsil, the sword of his father Elendil, which was broken when its holder faced Sauron.. But its sections were brought back to Imladris (also called Rivendell / Rivendell) by the squire of Isildur before being reforged to become Andúril, “the Flame of the West” from which Aragorn will inherit in The Lord of the Rings. Isildur was also known for having managed to save a fruit from the White Tree Nimloth, a relic of the Immortal Lands, before King Ar-Pharazôn burned it at the direction of Sauron. This fruit was thus able to give a new shoot which became the famous White Tree of Gondor. Isildur will appear as Maxim Baldry in the series.

Elendil

Like Isildur, Elendil can also be seen in the long-form prologue directed by Peter Jackson for The Fellowship of the Ring. Father of Isildur, Elendil perishes against Sauron after having managed to repel him all the same during the Last Alliance of Elves and Men alongside Gil-galad. It is said that his Narsil sword broke beneath him when he was struck down by Sauron. As a scion of the line of Elros and last prince of Númenor, Elendil sailed east to found the exiled Númenórean kingdoms: Arnor and Gondor, with the help of his sons Isildur and Anarion. By escaping the submersion of the island kingdom thanks to the recommendations of his father Amandil, he preserved from destruction seven palantíri, the “clear-sighted stones” including the trilogy of Lord of the Rings offers us a glimpse with the famous stone of Orthanc guarded by Saruman. Thanks to the precautions of Elendil and his sons, a fruit from the White Tree and the fragments of the Narsil sword are also preserved. Once at Lindon, Elendil will alert Gil-galad to the looming threat before laying the foundations of Arnor and Gondor. Elendil is played by Lloyd Owen in the series Rings of Power.

Gil-galad

The Lord of the Rings: which characters from Peter Jackson's trilogy are present in the Amazon series The Rings of Power?

The character of Gil-galad appears in a deleted scene from the Peter Jackson trilogy and is visible very briefly in the shot showing the holders of the three rings of the Elves, alongside Galadriel and Círdan, the lord of the Gray Havens. As High King of the Noldor, he led the Elven troops in the Last Alliance of Men and Elves. This mythical figure from Tolkien’s Legendary is sure to play a central role in Amazon’s series, his spear Aeglos being as feared as Narsil, the sword of Elendil.. Like Elrond and Galadriel, Gil-galad is not fooled by the shenanigans of Sauron disguised as Annatar. When Celebrimbor decides to hide the three rings from the Elves, Gil-galad receives Vilya, the ring of air. It was he who would turn the tide of the first war against Sauron by requesting reinforcements from Númenor, then leading the Alliance with the Dúnedain of Elendil to the Battle of Dagorlad. Achievements which unfortunately did not prevent him from losing his life during the siege of the Dark Tower Barad-dûr against Sauron, alongside his brother in arms Elendil. Benjamin Walker plays him in the Amazon series.

Elrond

For fans of the film trilogy, Elrond is both Lord of Rivendell (or Rivendell) and father of Arwen. His wife Celebrían is the daughter of Celeborn and Galadriel. But Elrond is also the herald of Gil-galad and it is from this one that he inherits one of the three rings of the Elves: Vilya, the sapphire ring, after the battle of Dagorlad. This half-elf had made the choice of immortality, where his twin brother Elros preferred to follow the destiny of Men by becoming the founder of the line of Númenor. During the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, Elrond fails to convince Isildur to destroy the One Ring, as seen in the extended prologue of Peter Jackson’s trilogy. Actor Robert Aramayo takes over the role of Elrond in the series on Prime Video. According to the latest interviews, the character of Elrond would even be “the common thread of the whole story”, within the series.

Galadriel

Immortalized by Cate Blanchett in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, the figure of Galadriel should be omnipresent in the series Rings of Power. Actress Morfydd Clark takes on the heavy task of embodying a mythical character, characterized by his greatness and immeasurable wisdom. However, it is a different Galadriel that will be offered to us in the Prime Video series where the Lady of Lórien does not hesitate to wear armor to guide the Elves on the battlefield.. In a recent interview, actress Morfydd Clark explained that her character had wandered Middle-earth for centuries in search of an unknown, elusive, but very real plague. As for the armor resembling those of the line of Fëanor, it would have been offered to him by a mysterious character whose identity is still unknown. Born in Valinor, Galadriel joins the exile of the Noldor in Middle-earth in order to put an end to Sauron’s schemes. Holder of the Nenya Ring, given by Celebrimbor, she will play a key role much later in the success of Frodo’s quest leading to the destruction of the One Ring and will even resist its power of attraction. The character of Galadriel will occupy a central place in the series set during the Second Age of Middle-earth.
