Billed as the most expensive series in history, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power closed on October 14. A few weeks after the finale, we discover a report that probably shouldn’t make us happy Amazon Prime video.

Amazon’s deafening silence

The start of the 2022 school year will have been particularly busy for fantasy fans. For the first time in the history of American television, two huge fantasy licenses collided: House of the Dragon (originating from Game of Thrones broadcast on HBO) and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (streamed on Amazon Prime Video).

If the series Rings of power has divided Tolkien’s fans somewhat, some criticize him for some adaptation choices, it nevertheless enjoys a large community of fans, among whom we find Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in Peter Jackson’s trilogy. Since its launch, Amazon had posted absolutely impressive audience figures of 25 million viewers worldwide.24 hours after the airing of the first two episodes.

However, one could wonder at the absence of communication by Amazon’s characters for the following episodes. A recent article, published on November 4 in varietyand the title Amazon’s silence on ‘Rings of Power’ audience size is deafening (in French, “Amazon’s silence on Rings of Power ratings is deafening”), figures from a Nielsen report on the series’ ratings reveal. If, as indicated variety, these figures do not cover all viewers of the series, but only those who live in the United States and have watched Rings of power on their televisionthe fact is that they tend to highlight a certain tendency unpleasant to say the least for the company of Jeff Bezos.

This is shown by the Nielsen report series Rings of power lost 20% of its viewers in the two episodes after its launchwith a drastic drop between episode 3 and episode 4. If it is difficult to determine the total number of spectators for the time being Rings of powerit is important to remember Prime Video is present worldwide in two hundred countries and in 200 million homes. Conversely, the HBO Max platform is only present in a very limited number of countries and in a much smaller number of homes. Or else, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power benefited from much more media hype than House of the Dragon. The fact that the series, adapted from the work of George RR Martin, manages to reach an audience roughly equivalent to Rings of power is impressive. Also note that the graph below does not show the numbers for the last two paragraphs of House of the Dragon.

Naturally, Amazon doesn’t need to be ashamed of the characters in its fantasy series. This is the best start for a platformer series. If the graph above seems to indicate that Reacher had a better launch than Rings of power, variety recalls that the entire first season of Reacher came out the same day, while Rings of power aired one episode a weekincluding two on the day of launch (compared to three for The boys and The Wheel of Time).

We can nevertheless wonder about the obvious lack of communication from Amazon. It seems to us that the company is no doubt disappointed that despite a budget more than double that House of the Dragon, Rings of power fails to lead the dragé high to the series of HBO. Especially since the latter was accompanied by real critical acclaim (84% satisfaction on Rotten tomatoesand 39% for Rings of power).
